Golden Arrows claimed a 2-1 win over Absa Premiership strugglers Free State Stars at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Sunday afternoon.
Knox Mutizwa scored a brace for the hosts who move up to ninth place following the win. Ea Lla Koto fall down to 13th place and two points above the relegation zone with two rounds of fixtures remaining.
Mutizwa opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 18th minute following a foul on the forward by Stars goalkeeper Samuel Mbambo. The striker dusted himself off before stroking the ball into the back of the net.
He doubled his tally eight minutes later, striking home a crisp free-kick past Mbambo who was left rooted to the spot.
Sibusiso Hlubi scored a stunning free-kick of his own to half the deficit in the 33rd minute as the Arrows duly carried a narrow lead into the break.
Stars turned the screw in the second half and despite creating several goal-scoring chances in the closing stages, they were unable to find the back of the net once more as Abafana Bes’thende stretched their unbeaten run in the league to five matches.
