Nigeria international John Obi Mikel scored just his second goal in English league football on Sunday, but it was not enough to keep Middlesbrough's hopes of promotion alive.

The 32-year-old capped a terrific short stint with Boro with a goal in a 2-1 win over Rotherham United, but it was not enough to move the club into the playoff spots as they finished the English Championship season in seventh place.

Mikel featured 18 times for the club since joining Boro on a short-term deal in January and talking to BBC Tees Sport in the aftermath, the Chelsea midfielder seemed to suggest that he will not be playing at the Riverside Stadium next season.

"I still want to win trophies, I'll go somewhere where the players, the team, the fans, the staff, want to win," Mikel said.

He added when asked if he will sign a contract extension: "I don’t know, you can never say never. My contract ends, if there’s a conversation, okay fine.

”It’s a great club, it’s a big club. They will find the right players, get that dressing room back and make sure next season they are in the playoffs or automatic promotion.

”I don’t know, we’ll see what happens. I have conversation with my people and then we’ll see what comes out, options here and there.

”There’s a lot of option but you always have to pick the right one, the one that is going to suit you and suit the way you play and what you want to achieve," he concluded.
