EFL Championship winners Norwich City are reportedly one of the front-runners to sign Nigerian national team captain John Obi Mikel according to Sports 247.

The Canaries were linked with a move for the Middlesbrough player in recent days and it appears as if Norwich and Sheffield United – two teams which have both secured direct promotion to the Premier League for the 2019/20 season – are set to battle it out for the Super Eagles star’s signature.

The 32-year-old moved to Middlesbrough in January this year after agreeing to a termination of his contract at Chinese Super League club Tianjin TEDA.

Mikel made 19 appearances under Tony Pulis but was unable to help the north east side secure a place in the promotion playoffs.

Nonetheless, he scored his first league goal in England since 2013 on the final day of the Championship season, and his consistent displays have caught the eye of Norwich manager Daniel Farke.

After speculation of a move abroad, Mikel recently revealed he would be playing in England next season, strengthening the Canaries’ bid to sign the player.

The midfielder would bring plenty of Premier League experience to Carrow Road, having spent 10 years at Chelsea.

His time at Stamford Bridge included 249 Premier League appearances, two titles, three FA Cups, a League Cup, the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League.
