South Africa beat Malawi 5-4 on penalties to clinch the 2019 Cosafa Cup Plate title at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday evening.
Following 120 minutes of football without a goal, the game would be decided by means of a dreaded penalty shoot-out. With both teams found wanting from the spot on occasion, the game drifted into sudden death after Jerome Dickens squandered a chance to win it for the hosts.
Reeve Frosler and Teboho Mokoena kept their cool to give Bafana Bafana an advantage and with the pressure mounting, Charles Petro cracked as he sent his attempt onto the crossbar to hand South Africa the win.
The best chance of regulation time fell to Kamohelo Mahlatsi in the 36th minute, but he would be denied by the woodwork.
Both teams had further chances with Mahlatsi squandering another gilt-edged opportunity in extra-time, but neither team could find the back of the net after 120 minutes of football.
South Africa are now the Cosafa Cup Plate winners for the third successive year.
