South African referee Victor Gomes will take charge of the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Algeria this Friday.

Gomes, 36, is regarded as one of the continent's top officials and will be handed arguably the biggest assignment of his career when he takes the whistle at Cairo International Stadium.

Senegal booked their place in only a second Afcon final with a narrow 1-0 win over Tunisia in a drama-filled encounter. The Lions of Teranga have yet to win Africa's premier competition; losing in the 2002 final to Cameroon.

Algeria will make their third final appearances this weekend, and first since winning the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil.

Riyad Mahrez scored a last-minute goal to secure a 2-1 semi-final win over Nigeria, to duly set up a second clash against Senegal at this year's tournament.

The Desert Foxes beat Senegal 1-0 in the group stages.
