New Everton signing Fabian Delph says he wants to play alongside Idrissa Gueye in the team’s midfield – not replace the Senegalese international.
Delph, who was signed from Manchester City earlier this month, is versatile enough to play in several different positions, but is primarily a defensive midfielder.
This fact led to speculation that the England international was brought to Goodison Park as a replacement for Gueye, who has been strongly linked with a move to French Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Everton manager Marco Silva insists that Delph has not been signed to take Gueye’s place in the side and the former Man City player maintained that he hopes the Senegalese remains with the Toffees.
Asked if the manager had spoken to him about the matter, Delph said: “No, I’ve only been here a week and tried to get up to speed with the lads.
“The training is a lot different to my last club. The work rate is really up there, I’ve been really impressed with that.
“I can play in quite a few positions. Hopefully he [Gueye] stays because he’s a fantastic player and a great asset for the club.
“If I’m asked to play in any position then it’s nothing less than 100 percent.”
