Nigerian midfielder Ogenyi Onazi says that missing the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals was heartbreaking for him.

The midfield maestro ruptured his Achilles tendon while in action for Trabzonspor in a Turkish Super Lig game against Rizespor in December 2018.

The injury ruled him out of the rest of the season and he missed the 2019 AFCON finals.

Onazi, who won the 2013 AFCON title with Nigeria in South Africa, has since opened up about missing the continental tournament which was hosted by Egypt.

“I cannot deny how I felt about it,” Onazi told Brila FM.

“I almost got crazy but I had to just control myself, keep training and avoid distractions to focus on my club.

“Now, I am happy and looking forward to doing more exploits.”

The Super Eagles of Nigeria reached the semi-finals of the 2019 AFCON, but they were defeated by eventual champions Algeria.

They managed to secure a third-place finish after defeating Tunisia.
