Ahead of his move to Paris Saint-Germain from Everton, Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gueye was described as a “gem, a jewel” by former Lille coach Rene Girard.
The French tactician worked with Gueye at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy from 2013 to 2015 and insists that the hard-running West African will be a superb acquisition for the reigning Ligue 1 champions.
Girard told Le Parisien: “He’s a gem, a jewel just waiting to be polite. He knows how to do everything, whether collectively or individually.
“In a club like Paris, we will see a new dimension from him. I am not sure that England was really made for him.
“What I am sure, however, is that Paris is not mistaken. He deserves to come to PSG and he will show what he can do.
“When he signed for Aston Villa (in 2015), he was coming out of a remarkable season with us, in Lille.
“I thought we’d talk a little bit more about him. The big mouths are more highlighted than boys like him. I do not see how he could not succeed in Paris.”
Gueye recently helped Senegal reach the final of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where they were beaten 1-0 by Algeria.
