Africans set to shine in UCL third round qualifiers

The 2019/20 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round first-leg matches will take place between Tuesday and Wednesday.


Five matches are scheduled to be played on Tuesday as the teams look to advance to the play-off round by winning their ties on aggregate.


Moroccan defender Faycal Rherras will be hoping to play an important role in helping Azerbaijan champions Qarabag FK secure victory over Cypriot side APOEL at their home ground, GSP Stadium.


Rherras’ countryman Hakim Ziyech will be in action when his Dutch club, Ajax Amsterdam takes on Greek champions PAOK at the Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki.


At the Stadion Maksimir in Croatia, Nigerian midfielder Iyayi Atiemwen and his Dinamo Zagreb teammates are set to host Hungarian champions Ferencváros.


While Senegalese forward Dame Ndoaye will look to inspire Danish giants FC Copenhagen to victory over Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade at the Red Star Stadium.


South African forward Percy Tau will be keen to continue his good start at former Belgian champions Club Brugge when they play host to Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kyiv at the Jan Breydel Stadium.


Five more games will be played on Wednesday with Nigerian striker Samuel Adegbenro’s Norwegian club Rosenborg BK set to host Slovenian champions Maribor at the Ljudski vrt.


Romanian champions CFR Cluj, who have Malian midfielder Yacouba Sylla on their books, will welcome Scottish giants Celtic at the Stadionul Dr. Constantin Rădulescu.


At the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, experienced Cameroonian defender Aurélien Chedjou will look to help Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir overcome the hosts, Greek giants Olympiacos.


Portuguese giants FC Porto will look to their star forward Moussa Marega, who hails from Mali, when they square off with Russian outfit FC Krasnodar at the Krasnodar Stadium.


Lastly, former Swiss champions Basel, who have Angolan striker Afimico Pululu on their books, will battle with Austrian club LASK at their home ground, St. Jakob-Park.


The second-leg matches are scheduled to be played on Tuesday, August 13.
