Libyan giants Al Ittihad have appointed Ivan Minnaert as their new head coach ahead of their 2019/20 CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Al Teeha will be away to Nigerien club US Gendarmerie Nationale in the preliminary round first-leg match on Sunday in Niamey, in what will be the first official match of new Belgian tactician Minnaert.

Minnaert is a journeyman having worked in African countries such as Mali, Rwanda, Kenya, Guinea and South Africa besides spells in Spain and Maldives.

Ittihad have roped in new players including Abdulaziz Al-Suwaiyi, Bashir Al-Karami, Ayoub Hamdi and striker Mohammed Al-Marimi, who all joined ahead of the current season.

“I trust in the ability of my players in our quest to go far in the competition,” Minnaert said.

“Also, I have some players who have experience at the continental level by virtue of representing the Libya national team.

“The beginning of a project is always difficult, especially with the current situation of Libya, However, the players have been working hard and want to prove that they are warriors,” he added.

“Together with the support of the fans, we can achieve some great results,”

The second-leg will take place in a fortnight in Tunisia, due to the political situation in Libya.
