Saturday’s action in South Africa’s Absa Premiership saw three 1-0 home wins, with Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs going to the top of the log.

Defender Eric Mathoho scored the decisive goal for the Amakhosi for the second week in a row, as they overcame Black Leopards in a night game at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The day’s action opened with Polokwane City defeating AmaZulu 1-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium to go to the top of the log on six points (Chiefs would later join them on that tally and edge ahead on goal scored).

Rise and Shine claimed the victory thanks to an injury-time header from Ghanaian striker Mohammed Anas, while Usuthu slumped to a second victory and sit at the foot of the table (with Leopards just above them).

The early evening game came from Athlone Stadium and was a feisty derby encounter between Cape Town City and top-flight rookies Stellenbosch. Benni McCarthy’s Citizens won the clash 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Chris David, though they did need goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh to make a world-class save to deny Leletu Skelem from close range late on.

The weekend’s Absa Premiership action will wrap up on Sunday afternoon with a game between Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows at Dr Molemela Stadium.
