Malawi name 33-man squad for World Cup African qualifiers

Malawi are among the first countries to begin preparations for the kick off of African qualifiers for the next World Cup and have named a squad of 33 locally based players for an initial training camp before they take on Botswana over two legs next month.

Malawi coach Meke Mwase named eight new players for the initial preparations in Blantyre where the locals will be assessed.

He is to add to the squad from the country’s foreign-based contingent before they travel to Francistown to take on Botswana on September 7 with the return leg at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre three days later.

Mwase has handed a maiden call-up to Wanderers goalkeeper William Thole and midfielder colleague Francisco Madinga.

Also new are the Mzuni pair of defender Lughano Kayira and midfielder Lackson Sangano

The others are Chitipa United defender Justice Chihoma and midfielder Emmanuel Muira as well as Lloyd Njaliwa of Moyale Barracks and Foster Bitoni of Blue Eagles.

Malawi have players based at clubs in Mozambique and South Africa as well as striker Jabulani Linje, who plays in Japan’s third division.
