South African youngster Tashreeq Matthews has penned a short-term loan deal with top Swedish side Helsingborgs, the club confirmed on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old attacker arrives from German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund and will stay in Sweden for the remainder of the 2019 season.
It is a second loan spell for the teenager, who spent the second half of last season with Dutch side Utrecht, though he only played for their reserve side.
“I feel welcome and it feels very good to be here,” he told his new club’s website. “The fans have to decide for themselves what kind of player I am. I still have a lot to learn but what I can say is that I am here to do my best and help the club.”
He will be coached by former Barcelona and Manchester United star Henrik Larsson, who is trying to lead a revival of Helsingborgs after some years of struggle.
“Tashreeq is a young, promising and creative player that we can borrow from Dortmund at no cost. It will be a lot of fun to work with him,” Larsson said.
Larsson is no stranger to South African players having worked before with current Cape Town City winger Surprise Ralani at Landskrona and Helsingborgs.
South African junior international Matthews is seen as one of the country’s top talents, but has yet to make his professional debut.
Helsingborgs are currently 11thin the Swedish top-flight with 11 games remaining in the regular season. The club are seven-time champions of Sweden, but not since 2011.
