Nigeria national team assistant coach Imama Amapakabo says the door is open for Kelechi Iheanacho to return to the Super Eagles’ set-up.
The forward did not make the cut for Nigeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations squad, having struggled to establish himself as a regular for Leicester City through the 2018/19 campaign.
However, the Nigerian enjoyed an excellent pre-season for the Foxes and hopes are high that he will thrive in manager Brendan Rodgers’ first full season in charge at the King Power Stadium.
Should this be the case, Iheanacho will be welcomed back into the Nigerian team with open arms.
“We have new competitions lined up; we have the Nations Cup qualifiers and the World Cup qualifiers. It’s a new season for Kelechi and we are glad that whatever his problems were, he has found an answer at club level,” Amapakabo is quoted by Nigeria’s Football Live.
“Kelechi has always been a member of the Eagles team despite the fact that he was not selected for the AFCON in Egypt.
“We are wishing him the very best, hopefully he continues with this form of his and he’ll be back in the team in no time, when players are called up for our next matches.”
Nigeria will next be in action in September when they face Ukraine in a friendly in Dnipro, before their AFCON 2021 qualifiers begin with a clash against Benin in November.
