Cape Town City will open the defence of their MTN8 crown when they meet Polokwane City in a quarterfinal at Newlands Stadium on Saturday 17 August, kick-off at 15h00.

CT City come into the game on the back of a 1-0 win over new derby rivals Stellenbosch last weekend. Benni McCarthy’s side claimed the league victory thanks to an early goal from midfielder Chris David.

The Citizens won their first MTN8 title in 2018, ousting Maritzburg United (1-0) and Mamelodi Sundowns (4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw) in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively, before edging SuperSport United 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time in the final.

Polokwane’s last outing saw them beaten 1-0 at home by Bidvest Wits in midweek. However, the Limpopo team have made a good start to their league campaign by winning two of their first three matches.

Rise and Shine have never won the MTN8. In fact this year represents just their second participation in the competition – the first was in 2017 and ended in the quarterfinal stage as they lost 1-0 away to Cape Town City.

In head-to-head stats, the above-mentioned MTN8 clash – which was decided by an own goal from Sibiusiso Mbonani – is the only previous cup game between the teams.

Overall, they have met in seven league and cup matches since 2016/17 (CTC’s first season since being renamed and relocated from Mpumalanga Black Aces): the Cape side has claimed four wins compared to one for the Limpopo club.

Last season the Citizens took four points off Rise and Shine in their two league clashes, winning 2-1 in the Limpopo province in November 2018, before the return game in the Western Cape in March 2019 ended in a goalless stalemate.
