Three MTN8 quarterfinals were played in South Africa on Saturday, with Mamelodi Sundowns booking their place in the final four with a 3-1 home win over Bloemfontein Celtic.
The Brazilians had to come from behind in a night game at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, but goals from Themba Zwane, Mosa Lebusa and Keletso Makgalwa ensured they were not the third high-profile exit of the day and remain in with a chance of winning the only domestic trophy they have not claimed in the reign of manager Pitso Mosimane.
The day opened at the Newlands Rugby Stadium with a surprise result, as defending champions Cape Town City were beaten 2-0 by Polokwane City. The Limpopo side scored through Mohammed Anas and Charlton Mashumba to advance into the semifinals for the first time in their history.
Highlands Park also became first-time semifinalists when they shocked Orlando Pirates 1-0 in Soweto in the early evening game. Substitute Wayde Jooste scored the only goal late in the match, seeing the Lions of the North to a famous victory, while the Buccaneers move further into a tailspin, with this result (coming in the wake of the shock resignation of coach Milutin Sredojevic on Friday) representing a third straight defeat across all competitions.
The last quarterfinal will be played in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon and sees Bidvest Wits host SuperSport United.
