Ghanaian midfielders Mubarak Wakaso and Thomas Partey headline African involvement in Spain’s La Liga on Sunday 18 August 2019.
Saturday’s action saw Real Madrid triumph 3-1 away to Celta de Vigo, Geoffrey Kondogbia played the full 90 minutes as Valencia were held 1-1 at home by Real Sociedad, and a Mallorca side inspired by the likes of Lumor Agbenyenu, Iddrisu Mohammed and Junior Lago marked their return to La Liga with a 2-1 win over Eibar.
In addition, Saturday’s night games saw Nigerian star Samuel Chukwueze score a fine goal in Villarreal’s amazing 4-4 draw with Granada (which also featured Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Karl Toko Ekambi for the former), while Moroccan Youssef En Nesyri played 90 minutes for Leganes in their 1-0 loss at home to Leganes.
Wakaso is set to feature in the opening game late this afternoon, as his Deportivo Alaves side play host to Cheick Doukoure’s Levante at Estadio de Mendizorroza.
Next up on the card is Espanyol v Sevilla, before a match at the Benito Villamarin sees North African pair Zouhair Feddal and Aissa Mandi likely to feature in defence for Real Betis against Real Valladolid, with the latter able to call on Anuar Tuhami in midfield.
The final match of the day completes the first round in the Spanish top flight, as Atletico Madrid host Getafe at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. Partey will hope to start in midfield for Diego Simeone’s side, while the visitors can call on Djene Dakonam, Allan Nyom, Faycal Fajr and Amath Ndiaye.
