South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates were both in action during Absa Premiership match-day three on Tuesday night.

The defending champions Sundowns were held to a 1-1 stalemate by a resilient Cape Town City side at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Hlompho Kekana opened the scoring to make it 1-0 to Sundowns with a wonderful long-range shot eight minutes into the match.

However, the visitors fought back and they levelled matters through Edmilson Dove’s superb strike to make it 1-1 five minutes before the half-hour mark.

The two teams then pushed for more goals as City defender Keanu Cupido and Sundowns attacker Sibusiso Vilakazi both hit the woodwork.

Ultimately, the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate and Sundowns remained fourth on the league standings, while City climbed up to the fifth place.

At the King Zwelithini Stadium, Pirates were held to a 0-0 draw by a stubborn AmaZulu FC side.

The two teams attacked each other from the start and they both came very close to scoring in the first 20 minutes of the match.

AmaZulu striker Andre De Jong hit the crossbar with a powerful long-range shot, before Pirates winger Vincent Pule hit the upright with a header.

Pirates piled pressure on the hosts after the half-time break, but they could not seriously test Neil Boshoff in the AmaZulu goal-posts.

The two teams were unable to find a late winning goal and they settled for a 0-0 draw on the night.

The result saw Pirates and AmaZulu climb up to seventh and 15th spots on the league standings respectively.
