The 2022 World Cup qualifier between Botswana and Malawi ended 0-0 in Francistown on Saturday.
This leaves the tie well balanced ahead of the return game next midweek, with the Zebras hoping they score an away goal at the home of the Flames.
Botswana enjoyed early dominance, including a shot from Joel Mogorosi which hit the post and Malawi goalkeeper Brighton Munthali making a fine save to deny Mpho Kgaswane.
The Flames settled into the game as it wore on, though they were unable to test goalkeeper Kabelo Dambe in the first 45 minutes, leaving the score locked at 0-0 at half time.
Botswana made a couple of changes early in the second half, sending on Omaatla Kebatho and Onkabetse Makgantai to try and capitalise on the dominance they enjoyed in the first half.
However, there was to be no goals at either end, leaving the game to finish goalless after 90 minutes.
The return leg will be held on Tuesday, September 10 at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
