Chad missed a late penalty that might have handed them a route back into their World Cup tie against the Sudan but in the end had to settle for a goalless draw away in Khartoum in the second leg of their first round tie on Tuesday.
Chad captain Ezechiel Ndouassel blasted his kick wildly over the crossbar in the 80th minute after left back Rodrigue Ninga won the spotkick with a mazy run into the Sudan penalty area before being hacked down.
It was a glorious chance to get back into the contest after Sudan had won 3-1 away in Ndjamena in the first leg last week.
But the miss put pay to any feint hopes the visitors would have had of an upset away win at the Al Merreikh Stadium, where they needed to win by three clear goals.
Sudan will be disappointed with their inability to score in front of their home fans but battled on a poor pitch which put pay to any chance of a decent passing game.
Sudan were also poor in front of goal in contrast to the first leg where Ramadan Agab got a hattrick to ensure an easy first leg win.
