Tough outings for Zambian sides in CAF Champions League

It was an unhappy afternoon for Zambia’s sides in the 2019-20 CAF Champion league second round as both struggled in their first leg ties to present the possibility that the country will have no representation in the group stages.

Zesco United came from a goal down to rescue a 1-1 draw at Tanzanian side Young Africans after a late, late equaliser.

Young Africans took the lead through a penalty from Patrick Sibomana after 25 minutes and piled on the pressure after that as they sought a large first leg advantage.

But they were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal when Zimbabwe forward Thabani Kamusoko equalized in the 96th minute.

It will have been a sweet goal for the 31-year-old, who left Young Africans for Zesco in August.

It is advantage Zesco for the second leg, but they will be wary of a Young Africans side that certainly has the potential to spring a surprise.

Zesco certainly appear to have a better chance to progress than compatriots Green Eagles, who had ousted South African giants Orlando Pirates in the last round.

They came up against 2018 semifinalists Primeiro de Agosto from Angola and lost their home leg 2-1.

Cristovao Mabululu gave Primeiro an early lead, but the home side drew level through Amity Shamende.

The visitors grabbed a massive advantage though as Emmanuel Ngudikam scored a second for them and they will be heavy favourites to complete the job in the return leg.
