Moroccan giants Raja and Wydad Casablanca took a huge step towards qualifying for the group stages of the 2019-20 Caf Champions League in an action packed Sunday on the African continent.
The first-leg first round qualifiers of both the Champions League and Caf Confederations Cup took place this past weekend.
A total of 16 places are up for grabs in the group stages of the CafCL while the 16 losers of the first round qualifiers will join the 16 winners of the CafCC first round in the play-offs of that competition, for a place in the group stages of Africa’s second tier competition.
Defending Champions League champions Esperance de Tunis were held to a surprise 1-1 draw away to Elect-Sport in Chad while there were no such problems for last season’s runners-up, Wydad, who registered a 2-0 win over FC Nouadhibou.
There were also notable wins for Raja, Asante Kotoko and USM Alger who dispatched Kenyan giants Gor Mahia 4-1 in Blida, while DR Congo giants AS Vita and TP Mazembe both played out 0-0 draws in Togo and Madagascar respectively.
In the Caf Confederations Cup, Zanaco, Triangle United and El Masry all claimed away wins while there was a shock 3-1 loss for record three-time champions CS Sfaxien away to Paradou AC in Algeria.
The first round second-leg fixtures will take place in two weeks time.
