Riyad Mahrez was Africa’s star performer in Wednesday night’s Uefa Champions League action.
The Algeria captain, who skippered the Dessert Foxes to Africa Cup of Nations glory in July, scored the opener and assisted the second for Manchester City in a 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.
Club Brugge and Galatasaray played to a goalless draw in one of two early fixtures on the day with a plethora of African players in action in Bruges.
Mbaye Diagne, who is on-loan in Belgium from the Turkish Super Lig champions, made an appearance off the bench in the second-half but was unable to make the desired impact for the hosts. Percy Tau was an unused substitute.
Victor Wanyama also failed to rise off the bench and onto the pitch in a 2-2 draw for Tottenham Hotspur in Greece while Ghana’s Thomas Partey played 76 minutes for Atletico Madrid as they came from two goals down to hold Juventus to a stalemate.
Elsewhere, Idrissa Gana Gueye played a starring role for Paris Saint-Germain as they trounced Real Madrid 3-0 in the French capital.
The Senegalese midfielder bossed the game as the hosts registered a memorable win over the record-time Champions League winners. Jean-Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting made an appearance of the bench for the home side.
