Former Orlando Pirates head coach Milutin Sredojević was hoping to pick up his second piece of silverware in the space of a month, but was unable to do so as his Zamalek side fell to a 3-2 defeat to Al Ahly at Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria on Friday evening.
Nigeria’s Junior Ajayi scored a brace for the Red Devils who duly claimed an 11th Egyptian Super Cup title.
Ajayi scored either side of a Hussein El-Shahat strike as last season’s Egyptian Premier League champions raced into a 3-0 lead.
The White Knights though were not going down without a fight and Mahmoud Alaa reduced the deficit to just a single goal following two quick fire penalties in the 64th and 76th minute respectively.
Zamalek pushed forward in search of the equaliser in the closing stages, but were unable to find the back of the net as Rene Weller won his first trophy as head coach of the famous Cairo club.
The two Egyptian giants will kick-off their 2019/20 league campaign on Monday the 23rd of September.
