Mamelodi Sundowns scored a whopping 11 goals as they became one of the first teams to book a place in the group stage of the 2019/20 CAF Champions League.
The Brazilians, who were crowned Africans kings in 2016, already enjoyed a 5-0 lead coming into the second leg of their first round toe against Cote d’Or of the Seychelles.
Yet there was no letting off the accelerator pedal from Pitso Mosimane’s side, as a hat-trick from Sibusiso Vilakazi led an 11-1 thrashing of the minnows. Themba Zwane, Gaston Sirino, Thapelo Morena, Motjeka Madisha, Anele Ncgongca, Mauricio Affonso and an own goal from Beniot Marie completed the score line, and saw the South African side rack up a 16-1 aggregate triumph.
Elsewhere in the Champions League, Angola’s Petro de Luanda drew 1-1 (both on the day, and on aggregate) against KCCA of Uganda in Kampala, leading them to qualify on away goals, while reigning continental kings Esperance had to fight hard for a 2-1 (3-1 on aggregate) win over Elect Sport of Chad in Rades.
In the Confederation Cup, South Africa’s Bidvest Wits overturned a 1-0 deficit with a 3-0 triumph over Swaziland club Young Buffaloes. Gift Motupa scored two goals as the Clever Boys advanced to the playoff round with a 3-1 aggregate victory.
Sudan’s Al Khartoum turned the tables on DR Congo’s DC Motema Pembe with a 2-1 win in Kinshasa. The tie was locked at 3-3 on aggregate, but the North-East African side held their nerve in the penalty shootout to secure progression against the odds.
