Egypt’s Al Ahly and Moroccan club Raja Casablanca have booked safe passage into the group phase of the 2019/20 CAF Champions League following four matches played across the continent on Saturday.
Ahly were already well placed against Cano Sport of Equatorial Guinea, with a 2-0 lead from the first leg, but they further emphasised their dominance with a 4-0 win in Cairo on Saturday night, courtesy of goals from Aliou Dieng, Junior Ajayi and Hussein El Shahat.
Raja, meanwhile, were held 1-1 at home by Libya’s Al Nasr, but based on the strength of their 3-1 away win in the first leg, the Casablanca club advanced 4-2 overall.
The early games saw Zesco United of Zambia and Zimbabwe’s Platinum FC put in powerful performances to secure progression. Zesco defeated Tanzania’s Young Africans 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate) thanks to goals from Jesse Were and Aziz Abdul Makame.
Platinum, meanwhile, came from two goals down to defeat Mozambique’s UD Songo 4-2 (5-2 on aggregate) in Beira, with an inspirational second-half hat-trick from Rodwell Chinyengetere.
The final scheduled match of the night was set to be held in Cairo between Zamalek (Egypt) and Generation Foot (Senegal), but the clash has been postponed to Sunday.
