Five-time Caf Champions League champions TP Mazembe survived a first-half scare to beat Madagascar’s Fosa Juniors 3-1 and subsequently book their place in the group stages of the 2019/20 competition.
Juniors were in the pound seat heading into he half-time break following a 40th minute away goal in Lubumbashi, but the hosts bounced back to ultimately claim a comfortable win.
Elsewhere, Etoile du Sahel completed a memorable comeback thanks in large to a brace from Karim Aribi who scored twice in the second half as the Tunisian’s overturned a 2-0 deficit to defeat Asante Kotoko on aggregate.
Wydad Casablanca and AS Vita profited from good first-leg results as they duly completed the job on their home turf, as did Al-Hilal Omdurman who followed a 0-0 draw in Nigeria with a 1-0 win over two-time champions Enyimba in the second-leg.
Kenyan champions Gor Mahia suffered a second successive defeat to USM Alger as their CAFCL hopes came to an abrupt end, as did perennial group stage participants Horoya’s as they lost on penalties to another Algerian club, JS Kabyile.
In arguable the surprise result of the round, Zambia’s Green Eagles overturned a 2-1 deficit; claiming a 1-0 win in Angola to knock Primeiro de Agosto out of the tournament.
The 16 losers will now take part in the Caf Confederations Cup playoffs for a place in the group stages of Africa’s second tier competition.
