Borussia Dortmund’s Achraf Hakimi, 20, has admitted that he was as surprised as most when Lucien Favre chose to start him in an advanced role for the club’s Uefa Champions League game this week.
The Morocco international, who is a left or right-back by trade, started out on the left wing and with great success; netting a brace in a 2-0 win for the German giants over Czech Republic’s Slavia Prague.
“I was a bit surprised that the coach started me in such an attacking position,” Hakimi told reporters after the game. “I know I can play there, and I’m just happy that I could help the team to victory.”
BVB club caption Marco Reus echoed Hakimi’s statements, but added that he wasn’t too surprised by the success the Moroccan experienced in his new found role.
“He’s incredibly fast. He played sensationally, that first goal was really outstanding,” Reus added.
“From that point of view, he’s always a weapon. The coach surprised us today but we know that Achraf is very, very important for us and that he can play in several different positions.”
Hakimi, who is on-loan in Dortmund from Real Madrid, has scored six goals and assisted a further eight in 38 matches across all competitions for the club.
