New Guinea coach Didier Six has released Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita from international duty, saying he wanted to give the player a rest in the friendlies against Comoros Islands and Chile this month.
Keita has only just returned from injury and his call-up was not well-received by Liverpool, with Six now seemingly relenting, say he would rather make sure the player is ready for the start of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in November.
“I would like Naby Keita to rest for these two matches,” Six told reporters.
“The two friendly matches are tough, especially against Chile, so I decided to change my selection (of Keita).
“In November we will have qualifications for the Afcon and until then I would like Keita to recover and be at 100% of his level.
“However, I will ask him to come to some meetings in Paris, which is the same as in the case of captain Ibrahima Traore, who is injured.”
Mohamed Mady Camara is also out of the group, meaning Six has called on midfielder Kamso Mara, who plays for Slovan Liberec in the Czech Republic, and Lille’s Aguibou Camara. Both are uncapped at international level.
