Wednesday 9 October saw the long road of qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations get underway with four preliminary round, first leg matches played across the continent.

The day’s action opened at the Anjalay Stadium in Belle Vue Harel, where Sao Tome e Principe scored an upset 3-1 win away to Mauritius. The hosts opened the scoring through an early goal from Kevin Perticots, but a brace from veteran striker Luís Leal dos Anjos, who plays for Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys, inspired the ‘Falcons and True Parrots Team’ to victory, with the third added by Jose da Silva.

At the Al Merrikh Stadium in Omdurman, South Sudan claimed a 2-1 ‘home’ win over the Seychelles (with their national stadium undergoing renovations). The Bright Stars’ victory was secured thanks to goals from Koang Kerjok in the 21st minute and Joseph Nayar just before half time.

The Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville saw Liberia claim a narrow 1-0 win over Chad, with an early goal from Kpah Sherman enough to secure victory for the Lone Stars, while Djibouti and Gambia played out a 1-1 draw at the El Hadji Hassan Gouled Aptidon Stadium, giving the Scorpions a slight edge ahead of the second leg.

The return games will be played on Sunday 13 October, with the four aggregate winners advancing into the group stage of qualifiers for Cameroon 2021.
