Sao Tome e Principe have ended their 21-year wait for an away victory in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after defeating Mauritius 3-1in Port Louis on Wednesday.

They will now be favourites to complete the job at home on Sunday and win themselves an unlikely place in the pool stage qualifiers for the 2021 finals in Cameroon.

Their Argentine-based striker Luis Leal scored twice to go with a goal from Jose da Silva in what was an historic away victory for the side. Kevin Perticots had given Mauritius a first half lead.

The teams are playing for a place in qualification Group C that also includes Ghana, South Africa and Sudan.

Tiny east African nation Djibouti also almost pulled off a shock win as they held improving Gambia 1-1 at home.

Mohammed Mbye scored an own goal on 61 minutes to put Djibouti in front, but Bubacarr Sanneh equalised in injury-time at the end of the game for Gambia, who will expect to advance with the home leg to come.

Djibouti do have some recent form, they knocked Eswatini out of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers last month.

In two other ties played, Liberia edged Chad 1-0 in Paynesville as Kpah Sherman found the back of the net, while South Sudan edged Seychelles 2-1, but could struggle in the second leg away.
