Nigeria international Daniel Akpeyi has dismissed talk of him competing for a place in the Kaizer Chiefs starting XI with Itumeleng Khune.
Akpeyi has been the preferred choice in goal for the Amakhosi this season as Khune continues to battle with injury.
The 33-year-old failed to impress in his first few games for the club last season, but has started towin over the majority of the Glamour Boys fans with a string of eye-catching performances.
Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp has also showered praise on the shot-stopper who has kept two clean sheets in his last two matches.
“I am not competing with anyone, only with myself to be the best that I can be to make sure that when I am given an opportunity I do my best and solidify my own ground,” Akpeyi told the media.
“Concerning Itu, I don’t know about him being out for two months, but we need him back as soon as possible. We need the backline to solidify and it doesn’t have to be with one person (goalkeeper), but so that in case there is anything we need his experience and his character behind us as well.”
Furthermore, Akpeyi – who was Nigeria’s first choice between the sticks at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt – expressed his desire to help the club end their trophy drought, by winning the Telkom Knockout Cup.
“We’ve been chasing to get a trophy for some seasons now and I think it’s a fresh start for a trophy,” Akpeyi added.
“So, we’re looking forward to make sure we start winning something from this season, starting from the Telkom [Knockout] or even from the weekend’s game that we will be playing,” he concluded.
