New Egypt head coach Hossam El-Badry says it was important for him to start his tenure with a win over Botswana on Monday.

Hamdy Fathi scored the only goal of the match as the Pharaohs defeated the Zebras of Botswana 1-0 in an international friendly match in Cairo.

It was Egyptian tactician El-Badry’s maiden match as Pharaohs head coach having replaced Argentine tactician Javier Aguirre.

“Overall I am happy with the training camp. I felt the player’s strong desire to start a new path. It was necessary to win,” El-Badry told the media.

“The camp wasn’t too long due to the difficulties of the past period and the delay in announcing the new Egypt coaching staff. I still can’t decide on omitted players in the meantime.

“We should have had Ramadan Sobhi and Mostafa Mohamed with us but they are with the Olympic national team,” he added.

“We have some missing elements, the team still got technical defects. We hope that we reach the goal we aim for.

“We want to achieve positive results to make Egyptian fans happy, this is what we aim for. We will give our best to fulfil the fans hopes,” he said.

“We could have had a big margin victory if we exploited our chances but we hold positive ball possession.”
