Frenchman Albert Cartier has been appointed the new coach of top Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel, according to reports in that country.

The 58-year-old takes over from Faouzi Benzarti, who lasted just four months in the role before he was axed in September.

Cartier has previously coached in France, Belgium and Greece, most notably with Sochaux and Metz, and was also a player with the latter during a 15-year career as a defender.

He was most recently with Ligue 2 side Gazélec Ajaccio, who he left at the end of the 2017/18 season.

Etoile are through to the group stages of the African Champions League, but it was a defeat in the Arab version of the competition that signaled the end for Benzarti.

Cartier’s first match in charge will be a domestic league game against Tataouine on October 24.
