Livewire Zamalek president Mortada Mansour says his side will not play the CAF Super Cup in Qatar come what may, even if his team are “relegated to the third division”.
The match between CAF Confederation Cup winners Zamalek and Champions League winners Esperance from Tunisia has no firm date after it had to be rescheduled from August, but the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have previously stated the game would be in Qatar.
However, Mansour says he will not take his side to the Middle East country with Egypt having cut diplomatic ties with Qatar in 2017 over a number of long-running political issues.
“I don’t mind facing Esperance in Tunisia, but I won’t play in Qatar to win a piece of metal,” Mansour told reporters.
“I already said that I won’t play in Qatar. Zamalek’s handball team didn’t participate in the Club World Cup because it took place in Qatar.
“If the CAF wants to create an issue I don’t mind. I won’t play in Qatar even if we get relegated to the third division.”
