Pressure continues to mount on Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy as his club slumped to a third defeat in succession on Friday evening.

Thabiso Kutumela scored the only goal of the game as Maritzburg United continued their revival with a 1-0 victory at Cape Town Stadium, a venue they have enjoyed playing at over the years.

Defeat leaves City in 12th place on the log standings and just three points above the relegation zone after nine games.

The Citizens are now winless in nine games across all competitions, having suffered first round exits in both the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout Cup during that period.

“Just a bad night overall. Too many players having off-days. The story of Cape Town City all season. We lost. It’s not a nice feeling to be in this situation [9 games without a win] for me. We are grown men, we have to pick ourselves up.” McCarthy said in the aftermath.

City next face Polokwane City, the team that ignited the club’s poor run, in a league clash in the Mother City early next month.
