Saturday’s action in the Absa Premiership was headlined by Stellenbosch’s 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates at the Cape Town Stadium.
The Cape side claimed their first major scalp in the top flight thanks to a first-half strike from star forward Iqraam Rayners – as well as a resilient defence and no little luck, with the Buccaneers twice hitting the woodwork in the dying minutes.
Nonetheless, Stellies were good value for their win and move above the struggling Buccaneers into ninth spot on the league table. The victory also served as sweet revenge after a loss to the Soweto team in the first round of the Telkom Knockout last weekend.
Also on Saturday afternoon, Golden Arrows struck a late winner through Ntsako Makhubela to defeat Polokwane City 2-1 at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium. It was a third straight league loss for Rise and Shine, who have well and truly lost the early momentum they built up.
The day’s action wrapped up at Makhulong Stadium, with Highlands Park rising to fourth place with a 2-0 home win over Chippa United.
Goals from Spiwe Msimango and Tendai Ndoro secured a fourth win from their last four league matches for the Lions of the North, who are five points adrift of log leaders Kaizer Chiefs. The Chilli Boys, meanwhile, remain rock bottom of the standings.
