New Egypt coach Hossam El Badry’s decision to hand the skipper armband to Mo Salah did not go down well with incumbent captain Ahmed Fathi, who vetoed the move.

El Badry hoped to smooth Salah’s relationship with the Egypt Football Association by giving him the armband, after a number of run-ins in recent years.

But Fathy is having none of it and made it clear he might quit the national team if the captaincy was taken away from him.

“Yes, Fathy was requested to give Egypt’s captain armband to Mohamed Salah,” Fathy’s agent Nader Shawky told ON Sport.

“Fathy was left surprised by this request and turned it down. I think he will not continue with the national team if captaincy was taken off him.

“My personal thought is that Salah himself will reject taking the captain armband from Fathy.”
