Lamontville Golden Arrows stunned SuperSport United 1-0 in the 2019 Telkom Knockout Cup quarter-final match at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday night.
The result saw Abafana Bes’thende book their spot in the semi-finals, while Matsatsantsa were eliminated from the competition.
Abafana Bes’thende contained Matsatsantsa in the early exchanges of the match before they broke the deadlock through Lindokuhle Mtshali just 12 minutes into the match.
The former Orlando Pirates midfielder scored with a great shot from a set-piece which beat SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to make it 1-0 to Arrows.
It was nearly 2-0 to Arrows in the 19th minute when Michael Gumede came close to turning home Knox Mutizwa’s cross with the hosts’ defence exposed.
Matsatsantsa pushed for the equalising goal after the half-hour mark with Dean Furman pulling the strings in midfield.
Aubrey Modiba had a chance to level matters a few minutes before half-time, but the South Africa international headed over the crossbar.
The score 1-0 to Arrows during the half-time break in the City of Nelspruit.
SuperSport coach Kaitano Tembo introduced Evans Rusike just before the second-half started as the hosts looked to restore parity.
The hard-running striker tried to make an immediate impact, but his effort went inches wide of Arrows shot-stopper Edmore Sibanda’s goal-posts.
Matsatsantsa pushed for the equalising goal and Sipho Mbule tried his luck from range, but the South Africa under-23 international’s effort missed the target.
Sibusiso Sibeko was introduced by Arrows coach Steve Komphela with 18 minutes left on the clock as the visitors looked to double their lead.
However, SuperSport were awarded a late penalty after Divine Lunga was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box in stoppage time.
Modiba then stepped up and he hit the upright from the spot-kick and ultimately, Arrows ran out 1-0 winners over SuperSport on the night.
