Liberia’s attempts to lure Australia-based striker Al Hassan Toure for the national side appear to have failed with the player set to represent Australia, according to reports.

Teenager Toure has been a revelation for Adelaide United in the A-League this season, and has had contact from Liberia, where his parents originate from. He was born in Guinea before moving to Australia at the age of four.

Liberia coach Peter Butler wanted to call the player during the FIFA International window this month, but according to reports he has turned down the approach. The west African nation did not qualify for the pool stages of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The 19-year-old will instead represent Australia in the Olympic Games qualifiers and look to commit his future to his adopted country.

Toure has scored six goals in seven starts for Adelaide in all competitions this season.
