Senegal forward Mbaye Diagne has been fined and suspended by Club Brugge following his penalty miss in the club’s 1-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain this week.
The 28-year-old missed a penalty he was not supposed to take in defeat to the French champions, after being fouled by Thiago Silva in the 74th minute of the game at Parc de Princes on Wednesday.
Diagne dusted himself off before taking the kick himself, despite designated penalty taker Hans Vanaken’s presence on the pitch. To make matters worse, Keylor Navas saved his kick as the Belgian club slumped to defeat.
As a result, the forward has been fined and left out of the squad for the club’s Pro League clash against Antwerp this weekend. It is now uncertain if Diagne – who is on-loan from Galatasaray – will play for the club ever again.
“It was a dumb mistake. A mistake that had consequences for the result and we are all very cross about it,” head coach Philippe Clement said at a press conference on Friday.
“This sort of incident leads to emotions and there was a confrontation in the changing room after, but it was verbal and not physical. Diagne realised he made a mistake and did not argue back.”
Diagne has scored four goals in six league games for Brugge this season.
