South Africa’s women’s side have lost their friendly international to Japan on Sunday, going down 2-0 in Fukuoka after two first half lapses.
The result is a satisfactory one against a very strong Japanese side, with Banyana Banyana responding well in the second half.
Coach Des Ellis gave a 100th cap to stalwart midfielder Leandra Smeda, and welcomed back top stars Thembi Kgatlana and Linda Motlhalo.
South Africa started the brighter but fell behind on 20 minutes when goalkeeper Andile Dlamini fumbled a corner and Japan star Saki Kumagai scored.
There were chances at either end after that, but it was the hosts who went into the break with a 2-0 lead as Yuika Sugasawa lobbed an out-of-position Dlamini.
Banyana almost found a way back into the match shortly after halftime when Kgatlana collected a pass from Refiloe Jane, but her shot struck the post.
