The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers officially got underway on Wednesday with no fewer than 11 games spread across the African continent.

Runners-up at the 2019 showpiece, Senegal, got their campaign off to a winning start thanks to goals from Sidy Sarr and Habibou Diallo.

Nigeria, who claimed bronze in Egypt earlier this year, came from a goal down to beat Benin 2-1 in Uyo. Stephane Sessegnon handed the visitors an early lead, but goals from Victor Osimhen and Samuel Kalu either side of the break spared the Super Eagles’ blushes.

There were also wins for Namibia and Malawi with Orlando Pirates forward Gabadinho Mhango netting the winer for The Flames.

The biggest shock of the day, though, came late on Wednesday evening as Gambia recorded a 3-1 win over Angola in Luanda thanks in large part to a first-half brace from Assan Ceesay.
