AFCON WRAP: Ghana win as Egypt fire blank on day of late drama

It was another exciting day of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying acton with six games spread across the African continent.

Egypt got Monday’s action underway with a 0-0 stalemate away to Comoros. The Pharaohs, who were without injured Liverpool star Mohamed Salah once more, were unconvincing throughout as they end the year with two successive draws.

Group G rivals Kenya failed to capitalise on the result as they themselves were pegged back by Togo in Nairobi. Hakim Ouro-Sama’s goal earning the Sparrow-hawks a point on their travels.

Elsewhere, both Mozambique and Gambia netted stoppage-time equalisers to draw 2-2 against Cape Verde and Democratic Republic of Congo respectively, while Ghana beat Sao Tome and Principe 1-0.

Jordan Ayew scored the only goal of the game for the Black Stars from the penalty spot.

Afcon holders Algeria rounded off the day’s play with a 1-0 win over Botswana thanks to a first-half Olympic Goal from Youcef Belaïli. Victory stretches the Dessert Foxes’ unbeaten run to 18 matches.
