Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United will have a showdown in the semifinals of the Telkom Knockout, with their clash set for the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday 24 November 2019, kick-off at 15h00.
Chiefs earned their place in the final four of the competition by overcoming arch rivals Orlando Pirates in the quarterfinals. The teams drew 2-2 after extra time before the Amakhosi better held their nerve in the shootout.
The Amakhosi have won a record 13 League Cup titles (three of them in the TKO era), though their last triumph was in the 2010/11 season. Last season they got as far as the semifinals before losing 2-1 to arch rivals Orlando Pirates.
Maritzburg also secured their place in the semis thanks to a shootout triumph. They held Highlands Park 1-1 at home after extra time in the previous round, before advancing on penalties.
The Team of Choice has never won the Telkom Knockout, nor reached the final, while last season they got as far as the quarterfinals.
In head-to-head stats, Chiefs and Maritzburg have met in four previous cup matches. The Soweto side has advanced on all four occasions, with three outright wins and one via penalties. The latter was in the teams’ most recent cup clash: a last 16 meeting in the 2016 Telkom Knockout which ended 0-0 after 120 minutes before the Amakhosi triumphed 4-2 in a shootout.
Overall, the teams have met in 30 matches across all competitions since 2005/06. Chiefs have claimed 16 wins compared to five for United, while nine games have been drawn. Their most recent meetings were in the Absa Premiership last season, with the clubs drawing 0-0 in Pietermaritzburg, while the return game in Soweto was won 1-0 by the Amakhosi thanks to a goal from Dumisani Zuma.
