Morocco captain Mehdi Benatia has disclosed that he was close to joining Italian giants AC Milan.
The 32-year-old defender left Italy in January 2019 after two-and-a-half seasons with Serie A giants Juventus.
Benatia was sold to Qatari giants Al Duhail after struggling for game time at the reigning Italian champions.
The towering defender explained that he indicated that he was “happy to be in Qatar.”
“I was only connected to AS Roma as long as (Frederic) Massara was there, and then he went to Milan and tried to bring me there,” Benatia told Tuttosport.
“I also spoke to [sporting director at Juventus Fabio] Paratici after the injury to [Giorgio] Chiellini.”
Benatia, who was born in France, also revealed that Al Duhail were unwilling to sell him.
“My current club didn’t want to let me go and I’m happy to be here,” he added.
Benatia helped Al Duhail clinch the 2019 Emir of Qatar Cup.
