Bidvest Wits of South Africa and Guinea contenders Horoya AC will open their Group C campaign in the 2019/20 CAF Confederation Cup when they meet in Johannesburg on Sunday evening.
The match is slated to kick-off at 18:00 CAT at the Bidvest Stadium.
Wits have reached the group stage of the Confederation Cup for the first time, having overcome Swaziland’s Young Buffaloes (3-1 on aggregate) and Mozambique’s UD Songo (8-1 on aggregate) in the qualification rounds.
The Clever Boys come into the clash on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Highlands Park in the Absa Premiership in midweek, a match in which they showed their typical fighting character by scoring in injury time to salvage a share of the spoils.
This gritty resilience, exemplified by spiky coach Gavin Hunt, will need to come to the fore if they are to excel in a group which also includes Libyan club Al Nasr and Djoliba of Mali.
Horoya have been regular features in CAF club competition in recent years and ‘dropped’ into the Confederation Cup from the top-tier Champions League earlier this season. They then defeated Kenya’s Bandari 5-2 on aggregate in the playoff round to secure progression into the group stage.
HAC, which hails from Conakry, come into the clash on the back of five straight wins across all competitions. Their most recent outing was a domestic championship clash at home to Elephant Coleah last midweek which they won 1-0.
The match in Johannesburg will be handled by Kenyan referee Peter Waweru. The other Group C game will be played simultaneously in Cairo and see Al Nasr host Djoliba at the Petro Sport Stadium.
