Bidvest Wits were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Djoliba AC in their second 2019/20 CAF Confederation Cup Group C match at the Stade du 26 Mars on Sunday.

As a result, the South African side is placed third on the group standings, while Malian giants Djoliba find themselves on the second spot.

The Clever Boys were able to contain the hosts in the opening stages of the match with Djoliba attacking in numbers.

However, the hosts’ pressure did pay off when they broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark.

Ousmane Coulibaly combined with Talatou Djibo, who beat Wits goalkeeper Brandon Peterson to make it 1-0 to Djoliba.

The hosts had a chance to double their lead a few minutes later following a good move by Georges Kouadio’s men.

However, Buhle Mkhwanazi produced a good block after Hamidou Sinayoko had unleashed a shot from close range.

Wits improved as the half-time break approached, but Terrence Dzvukamanja fired his shot straight at Djoliba keeper Adama Keita.

The score was 1-0 to Djoliba during the half-time in the city of Bamako.

Wits began the second-half brightly with Dzvukamanja making good runs into the box and the attacker missed the target with a header.

Phathutshedzo Nange was introduced by coach Gavin Hunt as Wits looked to restore parity just after the hour-mark.

However, the visitors were frustrated by the Djoliba defence which was led by Youssouf Maiga in the closing stages of the match.

Ultimately, Djoliba ran out 1-0 winners over Wits, who were unable to grab a late equalising goal on the day.
