FIFA head Gianni Infantino says Gabon President Ali Bongo has backed his plans to uplift African football after a meeting between the two in Libreville.

Infantino announced that he planned to including push for the professionalisation of an elite group of referees, secure around US$1-billion to invest in FIFA standard stadiums in every country and develop new and better interclub competitions to generate more revenues.

The FIFA president is looking to secure his powerbase in Africa and has received the backing of Bongo after they met on Tuesday.

“I am grateful for today’s audience with President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who is a great football fan,” Infantino was quoted on the FIFA website.

“I would like to thank him for his support to our plans to bring African football to the top. Gabon has naturally talented players and it is important to create the conditions for them to be able to play at the highest level in their home country and continent.

“There is a real passion for football here.”

Infantino also met with the leadership of the Gabon Football Federation having been on an extensive journey through Africa in recent weeks.
