African football legend Samuel Eto’o is bamboozled as to why Lebogang Manyama failed to make the grade in Turkey.
Manyama endured a short stint at Turkish Super Lig club Konyaspor in 2017, having the season before clinched the PSL Footballer of the Season award while captaining Cape Town City.
The 29-year-old, though, returned to South Africa having scored just two goals in 10 matches during his time at the club, where he was a teammate of former Barcelona forward and Cameroon great, Eto’o.
“I think Manyama is one of the best players and one of the best teammates I ever had, but the problem was there at the club, Konyaspor,” Eto’o – a four time African Footballer of the Year – told the media during the Castle African Fives launch in Durban last week.
“The coach did not give Manyama the opportunities to play, but everyday when he came to training, we asked ourselves, ‘Why is this guy not playing?’
“He is one of the best players in the team and one of the best teammates I ever had.”
Manyama has revived his career at Kaizer Chiefs where he has scored three goals and assisted seven in 15 matches this season as the Amakhosi opened up a substantial gap atop the Absa Premiership standings.
